OUR FOUNDING DIRECTOR:

Lora Heller, MS, MT-BC, LCAT, CEIM, Founding Director

is a Board Certified Music Therapist & Licensed Creative Arts Therapist with a Master of Science in Special Education / Deaf Education, a Certified Educator of Infant Massage, and a NYC mom.

Lora has worked extensively with babies and children of all ages through music and theater, both typically developing and those with special needs. Lora first learned sign language as a summer camp counselor so she could better communicate with a young Deaf camper.

In New York City, Lora has provided music therapy, music classes, educational enrichment, drama workshops, and parent/child sign language classes in such places as St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, St. Luke’s Hospital Division of Child Psychiatry & Roosevelt Hospital Preschool, The New York School for the Deaf, The Brownstone School, and the 92nd Street Y.

In addition to Baby Fingers, she currently provides music therapy services privately, works as Special Projects Coordinator and Adjunct Instructor for Music Therapy at Molloy College, and directs the summer Drama program at the URJ Eisner Camp.

Lora is a certified Sign with Your Baby instructor; she served as a board member for NYCCAT (New York Coalition for Creative Arts Therapists) and is a member of AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) where she served on the NYS Task Force for Occupational Regulation.

Based on her graduate research and hands on experience, Lora developed Baby Fingers after Zeke began to sign at 6 1/2 months old! Lora is the author of Sign Language ABCSign Language for Kids: A Fun and Easy Guide to American Sign Language, and Baby Fingers: Teaching your Baby to Sign (board book series), Sterling Publishers. She is the ASL Content Consultant for the 2nd series of Story Time with Signs & Rhymes picture books written by Dawn Babb Prochovnic.  Lora also co-authored a chapter in Meeting the Needs of Our Clients Creatively, a college textbook about music therapy with the dying and bereaved, and has written articles for New York Family as well as other parenting magazines.  Lora is has been a guest expert for Parent Magazine, Mommy Bites, Baby Does NYC, and Ages & Stages LLC.

OUR STAFF: Baby Fingers teachers all have college and graduate degrees in early childhood education, special education, Deaf education, ASL interpreting, psychology, creative arts therapy, music or theater, or another related field.  Over the years, our teachers have provided sign language classes, music lessons, music therapy, creative drama and sign, infant massage, parent and teacher workshops and birthday party entertainment around the NYC metropolitan area.

Baby Fingers was founded in 2000.
